About Us

Who is SALCA?

SALCA is the Southern Arizona Lutheran Camping Association.

We are a joint venture of churches in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) and Lutheran Church – Missouri Synod (LCMS) of southern Arizona. Staffed by volunteers from local churches, both pastors and laity, SALCA has been serving Southern Arizona Lutheran youth since 1954. While the location has changed many times throughout the years, the purpose remains the same: To provide a Christ-centered camping experience for elementary through high school age youth.

Elementary and junior high camp is run concurrently for a week.  Activities are separate during the day and campers are together for evening activities, ending with campfire time daily.   Each day  begins with a worship time to review the day’s theme. The day is filled with a time of interactive bible study, crafts, games, recreation, music, and ends with an all camp activities.

Camp staff includes: Dean (who oversees the daily functioning of camp); Staff Director (who supports the cabin leaders and LIT’s with any needs they have, including daily meetings); Bible Study (designs and implements daily bible study groups); Worship Leader (plans and implements worship each morning with cabins and for campfire activities each evening); Music Leader (leads and picks music used throughout the day for various activities); Craft Leader (prepares and leads groups in creating works of art based on theme of the day); Recreation/All Camp Activity Leader (prepares various age appropriate games for each group and coordinates the evening all camp activities); Cabin Leaders and Leaders in Training (care and supervision of campers for the duration of the week); Camp Nurse (administers the medications and takes care of all the bumps and bruises during the week)
